Walk the Walk for Prevention & Recovery
September 08, 2009Hundreds of local residents are collecting pledges of support from friends, family and business colleagues as they are gear up to walk-the-walk to benefit Positive Directions. The 2nd Annual 5K Walk the Walk for Prevention & Recovery will take place on Sunday, October 3rd at Sherwood Island State Park at 9:00 am. Everyone is invited to participate by walking all or part of the 3.5 scenic route.
Positive Directions will be presenting their Community Recognition Award to Gary Stromberg, Immediate Past President of Positive Directions. The Community Recognition award recognizes those individuals whose commitment and contributions serve as an inspiration to others. Gary will be honored for his many laudable achievements and his involvement in making Fairfield County a better community. The Walk, dedicated to the memory of Dorothy Bryce, longtime friend of Positive Directions, includes music, children’s activities, and a great barbecue prepared by Tony Aitoro of Aitoro and Jonathan Mathias of ‘a dash of salt’. Dog lovers are encouraged to bring their pets (on a leash) and to participate in a best dog-costume contest.
Proceeds from Walk the Walk will allow Positive Directions to provide support and counseling to those in need, regardless of ability to pay, and support its many community wide mental health, substance abuse prevention & recovery programs.
“Positive Directions is one of Fairfield County’s best resources for prevention, treatment, education and intervention for addictive behavior and mental health challenges” stated Heidi Cunningham, Chairwoman and Positive Directions Board Member. “We are thrilled to present such a fun day for the community. We thought a benefit walk was a perfect way for the community to demonstrate their support for this vital community resource and we are happy to see parents and children signing up to walk together.”
Opportunities for involvement include registering to walk; sponsoring a Walk route sign; volunteering or sponsoring a walker with a pledge or donation. For more information or to register please visit: www.active.com/donate/walkthewalkPD10 or call Positive Directions at 203-227-7644, ext. 125.
