CREATING LASTING FAMILY CONNECTIONS - Wilton 5th Grade Blitz

Event Description:

As a parent of a 5th grader, do you think about your child’s upcoming adolescent years?  Are you ready for the transition to Middle School?

For the 9th consecutive year, Positive Directions will offer the nationally acclaimed communications and prevention program, “CREATING LASTING FAMILY CONNECTIONS” (CLFC) endorsed by Dr. Gary Richards, Wilton Schools Superintendent and the PTA.  CLFC will be offered exclusively to parents of 5th grade students and will teach practical parenting tools for the ‘tween’ and adolescent years while at the same time building a unique community network, helping to forge long-term relationships with other parents through middle school and beyond.  The Wilton 5th grade CLFC program was a recent winner of the prestigious national Science to Service award in recognition of its success in teaching parents effective approaches to raising resilient children and enhancing family and community relationships.  The program components, include:

Raising Resilient Youth: Participants examine effective parenting skills, practice communication and interaction skills including expressing feelings, listening, and non-judgmental acceptance of others. Parents define and practice expressing their own clear expectations and consequences with their children in the interactive portion called Getting Real.

Developing Positive Parental Influences: Participants can expect to develop a greater awareness of chemical use, abuse, and dependency; to review effective approaches to prevention; to develop an understanding of intervention, referral procedures, and treatment options. Participants examine their attitudes regarding alcohol and drug issues, take an in-depth look at the dynamics of chemical dependency, the affects on families, and effective prevention approaches.
