MINDFULNESS THERAPY FOR CHILDREN (A new program for children ages 7 to 11)
Event Description:
Anxiety and depression are the most common behavioral health problems among young children. Early intervention can be effective in reducing core anxiety symptoms and provide lifelong coping skills. Mindfulness Therapy (traditionally known as Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy - Children) is an evidence-based program developed by Columbia University Child Development Experts to teach children, the skills that can help reduce stress and anxiety by encouraging mindful intentions, speech and behaviors. This group will work specifically with 7 to 11 year olds to teach:
- Age-appropriate, family integrated coping skills which can reduce anxiety
- An enhanced ability to deal with symptoms of stress
- Provide life-long coping skills which can prevent long-term risky behaviors
This program will be facilitated by Positive Directions’ Counselors Dr. Katie Liebenberg, Director of Adolescent Treatment and Susan Raphael, LMFT, Director of Family Assistance. This program meets once a week for fourteen weeks and includes pre- and post-sessions with parents. An evaluation session is required to ensure that Mindfulness Therapy is the appropriate program for each child.
